My First Sunset at Minaret Vista...

View of sunset from Minaret Vista

The first time I drove up to Minaret Vista, the clouds were rolling and swirling  right on the  Vista  point! The second time I drove up to see the sunset, I made the mistake of going to the grocery store before I went up...got there just as the colors were dying out...
Today, I got there about a half hour before the colors started to show...Daisy and I walked around, took a few pictures of the Minarets, and froze our little tush's nearly off!!!  The color came, but was confined to a small area, way off to the side of the Minarets...
Next time!!!

OOOOH Lordy!!! There's GOLD in them thar hills!!!

Methodist Church, Bodie State Historic Park, CA

"Goodbye God, I'm going to Bodie."

Bodie California was part of the gold rush in the mid 1800's that started in Virginia City, Nevada.  The town of Bodie grew to approximately 10,000 in population at it's height in 1879.  The town was "second to none for wickedness, badmen, and the worst climate out of doors".  The quote above was written in the diary of a little girl who was taken to Bodie by her family.  The quote became well known throughout the territory.

The Mammoth area is a Mecca for fishing...while the crowds have dwindled, the hardy still fish...

Something to Ponder...

Question:  What happens to the ducks when winter's snow packed season is in full swing???

While I saw several pictures of ducks in snow on the internet, I don't know what happens to the ducks here in the Eastern Sierras...do they brave the cold?  Or do they migrate south, or maybe just to Bishop???

This one's for you Laurie!!!

I swear that Laurie Allee of Glimpses of South Pasadena is a magnet for old cars...About every other week, she finds an old classic car that she features in her blog.
Well, while at the Laws Railroad Museum, I found this classic in the parking lot...

Question...As an avid follower of Glimpses of South Pasadena, is it possible that her classic car magnetism is wearing off on me???

Laws Railroad Museum, continued...

A large part of the Laws Railroad Museum is actually a historic site, featuring exhibits of all kinds of buildings and ways of life in the historic town of Laws...just outside of what is now Bishop, CA.

This shot was taken by my lovely 9 year old granddaughter, Kasey!

There's a reason Bishop's biggest event every year is called Mule Days...

Right next to the Laws Railroad Museum is a field  with all kinds of Mules...As we drove around Bishop the girls noticed horses all over and, yes, lot's and lot's of Mules!!!
I've always wanted to come up here for Mule Days...I think next year may be the year!!!
Mule Days is always on Memorial Day weekend...you just might want to put it on your calendar!!!

Fall Colors are Here!

Fall colors are here!   Our granddaughters have come up for their Fall break from school and today we took a drive.  It's been dark and rainy in Mammoth, so after breakfast and a few stops in Mammoth we took off down the mountain.  Our first stop was Bishop...I'll post some of those pics later.  Our most spectacular stop was Rock Creek Lake.  The fall colors have truly arrived in this very special place.  Not only that, but there was a dusting of snow in the mountain tops surrounding the lake!!!

It's a Family Thing....

Growing up, I always knew that someone in our family had a cabin in Mammoth...but I was knee high to a grasshopper when we were up there and not much bigger when the property was sold...so....I didn't really think all that much about it until I moved up here and my cousin said..."remember when my family had a cabin up there?"...

Now...cabins in the early 50's were modest...this one was about 800 sq ft...it was the bigger of the two cabins that my Aunt and Uncle built  on a corner in Mammoth...of course, my dad helped with the building...

Soooo...when I moved to Mammoth...Cousin Larry and I exchanged a few emails trying to fix the location of their property...
The key landmark was that it was on the corner next to the original Catholic Church on the way to Red's Meadow and the Devil's Post Pile...

So here's the original Catholic Church...

Wouldn't you know it's on the corner of Minaret and Main Street, across Main Street from Whiskey Creek???  (And about a quarter mile from our house!!!)

In the mid 50's, my darling Aunt was stricken with severe health problems and the family sold the property...

Soooo...it's about 50+ years later and Cousin Larry comes to visit...the first time he's been back to Mammoth (and Cousin Barbara's first time!)

Of course, yesterday, we went there to check out the location...we figure the old cabin was located right about where Cousin Barbara and Miss Daisy are standing...the cabin that once was, no longer is, and what's left is a parking lot...

To add salt to the wounds, as we were leaving one of our favorite late night spots in the Village last night  ...the Hubman mentioned to Cousin Larry that he had heard from a reliable source that this corner is one of the most valuable available properties in Mammoth due to it's location, and ability to be developed...(little did the Hubman know that it was once in the family)

Oh!  Did you hear that???  That was Cousin Larry in the midst of the screaming meemies!!!
