Dinner Anyone???

The California Gulls that grace the shores of Mono Lake
do so primarily because those darned alkali flies are so darned tasty!!!

 Actually, as I've mentioned before....
Mono Lake is the breeding ground for about 80% of the
California Gulls that live in our fair state.
And yes, their primary food is the alkali fly that hovers above the
land edges of Mono Lake.

Dinner anyone???

PS: thanks for linking from WBW

  5. One of the odd things about Mono Lake is the flies that swirl when you step along the edge of the lake...they settle in the sand, then when anyone, or any bird, walks along the edge, they swirl all around!!!

Yep...a yummy gull buffet Bibi and eileeninmd!!! What's also interesting is that these flies were the primary protein source for the indigenous people who lived here. They would take large baskets and scoop them up along the water then dry them...

Thanks Pia!!! Glad the translator helped! And sorry about the word verification...but I've gotten too much spam from blogs without it!

Thanks Stewart! The flies are very high in protein and fat...
