Our Little Corner of the World...

While the police department was working hard in town...

The fire department...

...aided by the Forestry Fire Department...

held canoe races all day on Saturday!!!
There were hamburgers, hot dogs, sno cones, and a fair amount of beer...

And wet dogs...one of whom snagged a burger...

"Awwww P-O-P!!!!  But that burger REALLY smelled good...and it was right there...
Annnnnnd....can't I P-L-E-A-S-E run around with the other dogs off leash???"

Then, of course, there were the canoe races....

...with a fair amount of pushing and shoving and capsizing...

The leaders of the pack...

And the winner is....!!!

The Firemen's canoe races is a fundraiser for the all volunteer
fire department of Mammoth Lakes...

A Hobbit Home???

Wouldn't this be the perfect setting to build a Hobbit home???

"Take one baby, a toddler and a building site.  Mix well with a generous helping of
mud, combine with 6 weeks of solid welsh rain whilst living under canvas.
Do this in candle light without a bathroom or electricity for three months.  Chuck
in living with your father for good measure.  Top with an assortment of large slugs.
The result is a hand crafted home of beauty, wamth and health for about
3000."

Carbon Dioxide? Volcanic Activity? Why didn't someone tell me BEFORE I moved up here!!!

This past weekend we went up to Horseshoe Lake with our visitors, my step-daughter Melissa and her significant other, Tim.  When we got there we were surprised to see an entire area of dead trees.  No sign of fire, no weird beetle bugs, simply put...high levels of volcanic carbon dioxide emissions.

Yep...Mammoth, or Horseshoe Lake to be precise, has been experiencing a steady high level of carbon dioxide gas emissions.  The people who monitor these things have assured us that the levels have not shown any increases since 1996...

Still, it's a bit unnerving...especially after having just visited Pompeii...
