Learning to Navigate in the Snow...

Sadie reminds me a little of me...
Snow is a new experience...

Getting around in it kind of depends on how deep it is...

Sometimes we're overly cautious....

Sometimes we just have to go for it...

And sometimes, it's just smarter to stay inside and hang out (like Cleo)!

Three of our greatest joys for which we are especially grateful, are our "rescued" pets...

Our dear friend, Altadena Hiker, aka Karin Bugge, is writing a regular piece each week in the Altadena Patch, an e-news site for Altadena.  In today's piece she is sharing stories of many bloggers and their pets to highlight the joys of "rescuing" pets...please check out the Altadena Patch here and don't forget to check out her awesome blog here!!!

We adopted Miss Daisy eight years ago from the Golden Retriever Club of Greater LA.  We met her at an adoption party, hosted by Anderson's, our local pet store.  In retrospect, Daisy adopted us.  We took her home, and after checking out the back yard, she fell asleep at our feet.  That night, Daisy slept on the floor at the end of the bed as though she had been doing this every night of her life.

The next day, while we were both gone, she got out of the yard and disappeared.  We both searched for several hours but couldn't find her. Several neighbors had seen a big Golden running through the neighborhood, but she was gone.  We were really down in the dumps and getting ready to go out for dinner.  Suddenly, about 8 pm, we heard a bark at the front door.  We opened the door and their was Daisy sitting on the doormat.  She walked right into the house as if to say, "I checked out the hood, and this is the best there is, so I'm here for good." She's hasn't run away since.  We can leave the gate open and she'll wander out front if we're working there, but she knows where home is.

She's the best dog either of us have ever had.  She's a huge part of our life.

This is Sadie, we got her from the Glendale Humane Society which is now a "No Kill" shelter.  I saw her on the internet site and knew I wanted to meet her.  We went to the shelter, asked about her, and was told that she was not adoptable yet as she had a respiratory infection.  We said that that was ok, we wanted to see her anyway.  We met her and fell in love instantly.  Fortunately, the infection was on the tail end of recovery and she was ready to go to her new home within a week or two.

Cleo was the Hubman's kitty before we got married...just a few months though, and I was with him when he picked her out at the Glendale Humane Society.  She's about ten now and puts up with the much younger Sadie, but sometimes...Sadie is just plain annoying...
(Sadie's nick name is Osama Bin Cat)

But they love each other anyway...whenever they're home alone and we come home, we'll find them curled up together somewhere or other in the house....

Miss Daisy is in her twilight years, we think she's about 14.  She's been feeling a bit poorly lately which we hope is just a passing thing...She's our darling golden girl...please wish her well...

It's all still such a new experience...

The first time our driveway was snow plowed...

The first time our deck is completely buried in snow...

The first time we have to be careful walking around the house, under the eaves...

The first time we've lived in a Winter Wonderland!!!

PS...this was the biggest pre-Thanksgiving snowstorm in 10 years...

Mammoth Homes Series...#1

One of the surprising things I've found in moving to Mammoth, is the number of homes that are...well... Mammoth!!!
This home is located in Juniper Ridge, one of the very exclusive neighborhoods of the town of Mammoth.  The craftsmanship and design of this beautiful home is superb...
And you should see the view...Juniper ridge over looks the Sherwins...a gorgeous span of the mountains of Mammoth...which you've seen  here.

I figure, if about 6 or 7 couples go in together, we might just be able to afford this magnificent place!!!  But I'm not sure about the heating bill...

It's a Learning Curve...

Many of you may remember my ramshackle old building in Bodie that I posted for a Weekend in Black and White  here...

Well, earlier this week, I upgraded my Lightroom 2 to Lightroom 3.2...and I decided to play around a bit with various coloration settings...and I came upon this one...I liked it a lot and was wondering what you all think of it???

Hope you're all having a lovely weekend!!!

A moment to reflect...

Please check out the Weekend Reflections meme for other interpretations...

Early Morning Surprise!

You may not know this...but I am not an early riser.  I am a night owl, and like to sleep later than the average person...a trait that endeared me to the Hubman's heart when we were dating.
Thursday morning, I got up just before 9, and decided I'd best take Miss Daisy out for her morning ablutions...in my pj's, I put on my slippers and Daisy and I went out through the garage...only to find all the neighbors congregating in our driveway, coffee cups in hand...
Across the street, a quite magnificent pine tree was in the process of being cut down...
Apparently, there was a considerable amount of rot going on in the inner core, and the tree was leaning decidedly...(towards our side of the street no less!).   Sooo, the neighbors decided to ere on the side of caution, and before it fell on it's own accord, decided to take it down.
Now, mind you, it's cold...I'm in my pj's...Daisy's doing her thing while greeting the neighbors...and they're dodging land mines while drinking steaming cups of coffee...
Well...I decided that it would be prudent, and quite a bit warmer, if I went in and changed, and of course, got my camera.  So I did...

Just as I came back down and walked out, the tree began to fall...
It was an amazing sight...and of course...I just wasn't fast enough to get the camera up to my eye to get the shot of it falling...
The above picture is immediately after it fell...

This picture gives you a good idea of just how big this tree was...

If you look closely, you'll see that the saw blade is just about as tall as the man holding it!!!

I have to say...these guys definitely knew what they were doing.  They used no guide wires to guide the tree as it fell, and with only about a half dozen guys working, they got the tree cut up and cleared away by mid day...
Our neighbors are going to have wood for the next 30 years!!!

(Ooops!  I goofed in my posting times/dates and can't get this to "unpost" and then re-post tomorrow!!!)
