An Experience of Color...

"Whether the flower or the color is the focus I do not know.
I do know the flower is painted large to convey my experience with the flower-
and what is my experience if it is not the color?"
Georgia O'Keefe

For some reason...I was having trouble with focus...
seems I didn't need to worry about it!

An Aspen Grove...

"I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown,
for going out, I found,
was really going in."
John Muir

A little side note...this quote was from John Muir's writings in 1913...
the same year that both my parents were born...

YES!!!

"I thank you God for this most amazing day,
for the leaping greenly spirits of trees,
and for the blue dream of sky and for everything which is natural,
which is infinite,
which is yes."
e.e. cummings

The only thing more spectacular than an Eastern Sierra sunset...
is an Easter Sierra sunset with Sierra Wave clouds!!!

Our Little Corner of the World...

"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you
something else is the greatest accomplishment."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

I've driven up and down Highway 395 to Lee Vining and Mono Lake
numerous times over the two and a half years we've lived in Mammoth...
Every time I'm driving south, back to Mammoth,
I've passed these two structures and thought...
I need to stop and take a pic!!!

Well...I finally did!!!

A Photographic Riddle...

What am I???

*I'm in the history books*
*I'm on the side of the road, in between Mammoth Lakes and LA*

Update!!!

Magical Mystery Teacher and Adele were the first to give the answer to the riddle...
and Bellis was the one who narrowed it down to the exact structure!!!
This is the watchtower at the edge of the Relocation Center at Manzanar.
Left over from World War II, this center housed thousands
of Japanese Americans who were unfairly incarcerated because of paranoia that
their "connection" to Japan would jeopardize the war efforts;
regardless of citizenship, war service, or faithfulness to the US ideals.
Manzanar is a reminder of a blight in American history where
paranoia destroyed the lives of thousands.
Manzanar has been historically owned by the City of Los Angeles
and a registered Los Angeles Historic-Cultural monument.
In 1985, Manzanar was designated as a National Historic Landmark.

For more information, check out these sites...

If you're heading our way up Highway 395, take an opportunity to learn more
about these relocation camps by stopping and visiting the museum here...
there is also a driving tour with a map where you can drive through the
actual camp and identify what was where.

Limitations?

"There is only you and your camera.
The limitations in your photography are in yourself,
for what we see is what we are."
Ernst Haas

There really is only you and your camera...and your processing program!!!
This is another one I almost tossed into my proverbial archive...
A touch of extra black, deeper shadows...
What can I say...turns out it's now one of my favorites!!!

CDP Theme Day....Umbrellas!!!

Lonely As Hell

"I am no man's burden
I can take care of myself
but it's lonely out in space
I've come to know the area well.
I salute shooting stars as they pass on by
a comet, a galaxy, but never a sigh,
lonely as hell out here, i say
lonely as hell
lonely as hell..."
Beyond Repair

Since we moved to Mammoth Lakes two and a half years ago...
(I can't believe we've been here that long!)
We've had little use for my beautiful bumbershoot, parapluie, er, ah...umbrella...
not much use for one in the snow!!!

So I searched and searched my archives...
and look what I found!!!

Bumbershoots galore at the Zydeco festival in Long Beach, California
many years ago!!!

Aren't they grand???
