Outside of Bishop is a petroglyph loop...
(Trav4 got it right in yesterday's comments!)
It is not advertised and you must basically ask those in the know
about how to find them...
After some dirt road driving and
really bad hand drawn maps...
Kelly and I found these...
Petroglyphs are rock art dating back 6 to 8 thousand years ago...
yep...pretty darned old!!!
The reason the California glyphs are not well advertised
is because of vandalism...
some lunatic actually took a saw to one to cut it off the rock.
It didn't bother me at all to have to go on a scavenger hunt to find them...
it actually added some excitement to the adventure!!!
(And for some reason, the powers that be didn't seem to
question my motivation to find them!!!)
TheChief joined Kelly and me for some glyphs that Kelly and I missed...
We found some, but not the ones we were looking for...
We'll find them yet!!!

ReplyDeleteVery cool! I'm glad you found those!
ReplyDeleteTerrific find. Looking nice and warm for you all :).
ReplyDeleteI was so saddened to hear that they were vandalized. We found them a couple of years ago and took a lot of photos of them. Saw a couple of snakes along the road and a pair of eagles at one location.

How very cool! Amazing that wind/rain haven't eroded them. Good find. Keep looking!

shhhhh - I've been. Might even be part of the route that I participated on by riding the back end of a cattle drive. I will never volunteer for such a position again.
ReplyDeleteI saw some of these years ago in Arizona. Always a thrill to see something so ancient.
ReplyDeletethis is interesting. Thanks for sharing this piece of history. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Tina! I'll check it out!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Brian! Still searching for more!!!
Thanks LOL!!! It's nice and warm in Bishop...and warming up again up here in Mammoth after our snow on Sunday and Monday!!!
Kelly and I were warned by a rattler on our last search Trav4!!! Fortunately, he wasn't much interested in either Kelly or me, and Kelly wasn't interested in pursuing the matter!!! I was astounded when I was told that someone took a saw and cut some off the rock...amazing!
Thanks Virginia!!! I know what you mean...it's very rugged land here with lot's of rugged weather so for these to last sooo many years is quite amazing to me!!!
Ohhh...that sounds like fun PA!!! You didn't like it, eh?
