This is Dunmovin, and it's for sale!!!
Legend has it that during the Dust Bowl years, a group of Oklahoma settlers
drove to California, and when they arrived at this spot on Hwy 395 they said...
"We're dun movin'!!!"
Well...I don't know who lives there now...
but it's for sale...
Actually, in the early 1900's it served as a freight station for silver ingots from the
Cerro Gordo mines...
Charles and Hilda King purchased it in 1936 and changed the name to Dunmovin...
There was a post office there for all of three years...
The rest of the settlement was a roadside service station, a store, tourist cabins, and a cafe...
The property was sold in 1961 and the cafe and store stayed busy for many more years...
It's deserted now...and for sale...
...And that, folks, is the rest of the story...

DeleteA fascinating story. Looks as if these buildings are set in a lovely mountain area.
ReplyDeleteThe Eastern Sierra run the length of the Owens Valley, down the middle of which runs Hwy 395...it is a beautiful drive, largely unpopulated due to water issues.
DeleteA 'fixer-upper'.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely...unless you're a desert mouse...
DeleteI'd like to visit it, but I'll pass on the real estate investment.
ReplyDeleteYou are a wise woman Kate!!!
DeleteSure! A few shingles and a little paint and it'll be good to go. :-)
ReplyDeleteThat and a bit more sprucing up on the inside...
DeleteMe! Just some TLC and it's done...lots of peace & quiet up there, I would think! Oh, and maybe a couple of rattlesnakes?
ReplyDeleteCheryl Ann
Definitely a few rattlesnakes Cheryl Ann!!! But it would be pretty quiet, although it is right on Hwy 395!

DeleteI couldn't resist looking it up. Asking price is.....$549,000.00. Wow!
ReplyDeleteThe value must be in the land and water.
I'd love to buy my own town, further up in the mountains. I need some trees.
ReplyDeleteWater rights in the Owens Valley are valuable. I think this place is ripe for an artist retreat.
