A Bear Huntin' We Will Go!!!

TheChief called me the other day and told me there were bears about...

I followed his directions...

but I don't think these were the bears he meant...

I kept looking...
Then...I saw them...
Yeah...there were two cubs along with this big girl...

Ever see a bear sleeping in a tree???

OK...sooo...I didn't find the bears on my own...
First, I found the "Bear Whisperer"...
Our own Steve Searles...
Animal Planet and Steve have produced several programs about the bears in Mammoth
and about how Steve works at re-educating them...

Here's a sample of one of the programs that have aired on
Animal Planet in the past...
The segments still run occasionally so keep an eye out for
The Bear Whisperer!!!

  3. The Bear Whisperer assures me that our Black Bears are pretty darned harmless Bibi!!! He gave me a quick lesson on bear watching etiquette...but I prefer some distance too!!!

LadyFi...this bear lives at a condo complex where he swims in their pool, has his own gate out to the golf course, and of course, has his tree bedroom...because he get's "spanked" if he snoozes in the yard on the ground!!! (spanking a bear amounts to a non lethal rubber bullet in the butt, or noise makers, or "the Bear Whisperer" simply yelling at him to move!!!)

Steve has been very successful at training the community how to deal with bears so that they don't cause trouble. Occasionally he "spanks" the bears when they're in the midst of doing something a good bear shouldn't do...his goal is to educate the "town" bears about proper town bear etiquette..and get them to return to the wild for their food sources...

  4. It's too bad that bears have to deal with us, but it looks like we're not going anywhere so we might as well figure out how to live together.

  5. I know what you mean Petrea...but the reality is...they've got lot's of terrain to be in the wild, but many of them figure it's easier to forage in the trash than to find the tasty berries...

  6. So interesting! Our local cities may need a visit from the Bear Whisperer to get some tips.

  7. Adele...Tip #1.... DON'T FEED THE BEARS!!!

I have a friend who lives way up in the foothills in the San Gabriel Valley...They have a huge glass window by their front door. Now...keep in mind that they have bear proof trash cans too...one day, sometime in October, a bear came to their window and was raising up on it's hind legs when their little Frankenstein Halloween decoration started moving and squealing...yep...it was a motion detector decoration and would go off whenever something moved near it...scared the bejeebies out of the bear and he took off running!!!

  9. That's a great story!! I agree with rule #1. I've probably mentioned that we have been going to Sequoia for about 15 years now, and I'm like the Bearbox Nazi. It's just so bad for the bears when they get habituated. Breaks my heart...
