Not suitable for children...

No...this is not a representation of the "Rape of the Sabine Women"...

It is however, the rape of a duck...

yep...you read that right...

According to Webvet on Wikepedia,
"...as many as one in three duck matings are rapes..."

Looking back over the photos on the memory card I have with me...
I found this one and remembered walking with Kelly to look at the Wisteria
in the park in Bishop.  Of course Kelly wanted to look at the ducks...
you might remember a recent photo of her doing just that...
and there it was...going on right there out in the open
and no duck police around.
It was brutal...
and I admit...a bit fascinating.
According to Wikepedia, the female in these cases often
get injured or even die (sound familiar?).
Now, you may think that this would result in a lot of unwanted pregnancies...
(do ducks actually get pregnant?)
but do not worry...somehow...
mama duck is able to "dispense" the "offending" sperm
and ends up with pregnancies that are 97% wanted.
(Now...how the heck do they know that???)

Now you can say you learned something new today!!!

  1. Reminds me of some work I was doing recently on mating in fish - the fish has two strategies - "courtship" and "sneak" - and sneak is the same thing as your post!!

Cheers and thanks for linking to WBW

  8. I was an "imposter" on To Tell the Truth about 12 years ago. The real guy was an entomologist (bug scientist) who was a professor at the University of Wyoming. He'd written a book about the sex lives of bugs. The other imposter was a Brit with a very proper accent and beard. I got asked questions like, "which bug has the longest penis in relation to the rest of its body?" My answer? "Why that would be the love, bug." You didn't have to know what you were talking about so long as you sounded like you knew what you were talking about. All four of the celebrities voted for either the Brit or me. No one voted for the actual professor.

    1. Based on the answer to the question posed to you... These guys could be considered the "love" ducks! If you get my drift...
