Stormy Weather

"If you spend your whole life waiting for the storm,
you'll never enjoy the sunshine."
Morris West

Morris West was an Australian novelist and playwright...
His best known works were The Devil's Advocate and The Shoes of the Fisherman.
I remember seeing The Devil's Advocate...the one with Al Pacino
playing the Devil...
and I vaguely remember seeing The Shoes of the Fisherman
with Anthony Quinn...
Do you remember either of these???

Earth...Teach Me...

"Earth, teach me to forget myself as melted snow forgets its life.
Earth, teach me resignation as the leaves which die in the fall.
Earth, teach me courage as the tree which stands all alone.
Earth, teach me regeneration as the seed which rises in the spring."
William Alexander

If you look closely, the beginnings of leaf buds are actually showing
up on the trees!!!  Snow or no snow, black and white aside,
spring is beginning to show itself,
even at 8000 feet in the Sierras!!!

I Can Leave...Right???

"I'm stuck in Folsom Prison,
And time keeps draggin' on,
But that train keeps a-rollin,'
On down to San Antone."
Johnny Cash

My cousin works in an art gallery in Folsom...so while TheChief
was in conference, I took off with the 'cuz and his darling wife to
visit the gallery...and...well...we were there...and it was a dreary day and all...
so we headed on out to Folsom Prison...

Fortunately we were wearing appropriate attire...

And we're neither Crips nor Bloods, and weren't there to visit anybody who was...

We did visit the little museum on the outskirts of the area we non-visitors could visit...
It is actually a museum honoring the prison guards...with lot's of interesting
pieces of old equipment and stories of visitors both famous and infamous...

Across the street was the post office...
there were actually a smattering of post boxes on the wall...
not sure whose they were...

It was beginning to rain a bit harder at this point and we
decided it was time to leave...
and we thanked our lucky stars we were able to leave!!!

Stairway to the Past...

Hsi Lai Temple, Hacienda Heights, California

"Life is a series of steps.  Things are done gradually.
Once in a while there is a giant step,
but most of the time we are taking small,
seemingly insignificant steps on the stairway of life."
Ralph Ransom

Hsi Lai Temple, Hacienda Heights, California

Then the victory is yours.  It cannot be taken from you,

Mystery in Black and White...

"A tree is an incomprehensible mystery."
Jim Woodring

While browsing through the participants of Skywatch Friday, I
discovered a fabulous photo by Nature Footstep Photography
and it occurred to me to play with some of my tree photos...
I was particularly interested in darkening the sky to black...
with the branches in high contrast...

What do you think???

Another one from the archives!!!

My photo files have been pretty messed up for awhile now...
thankfully, one of my friends up here is also a photographer...
and knows Lightroom so much better than me...
she helped me the other day and I've been reorganizing since...
and while doing that...
I've gotten to see and play with old photos!!!

Thank you Rebecca!!!

A Dance of Light and Dark...

"Nature is so powerful, so strong.
Capturing it's essence is not easy-
your work becomes a dance with light and the weather.
It takes you to a place within yourself."
Annie Liebovitz

The Land that Time Forgot...

Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

I wasn't expecting the Galapagos Islands to be so reminiscent of
a prehistoric setting...
After all, they're located at or near the equator...
I was expecting more of a tropical

there would be no such thing as beauty."

Weekend in Black and White...

"Black and white are the colors of photography.  To me they symbolize
the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is forever subjected."

You've Got Mail!!!

When someone new makes a comment on my blog, I generally click on their
"name" and check to see if they also have a blog.   This time I clicked on

He has an interesting blog and his last post was for the meme "Sunday Series"...one I'd not
seen before.  His post was about how "snail-mail" is dwindling in popularity and
because of that post offices all over the country, like the one in his city, are closing.
He showed some lovely photos of what looks like a true treasure...
I am so sad that his wonderful post office is closing...

I checked back in my blog to see when I posted this photo of an old post office taken at the
Laws Railroad Museum in Bishop, CA.  I thought for sure that I had posted it and was going to
post a link to it in my comment to him...but I couldn't find it!!!
So here it is!!!   My homage to the US Postal Service's glory days!!!

This is not an official entry to the Sunday Series Meme as I have not met all their criteria...but in case you want to check it out...click here!!!

However...this is my entry for...

Half Dome in Black and White....

Half Dome from Olmstead Point, Yosemite, California

One of the complaints about digital photography is the ability to
manipulate the photograph......

Did you know that Ansel Adams worked with his photos in the darkroom?
He used filters, dodging and burning the light and darks to just his satisfaction...

I'm so relieved!!!
