Ever hear of a saloon on Federal land???
This charming old building...circa late 1800's
was built as a saloon in the Mammoth area...presumably in Old Mammoth...
our neck of the Mammoth woods!
No...Mammoth was not a bustling ski community back then...
but it did have a reputation for fishing...
and camping...
In 1914, this little saloon was dismantled and rebuilt on the Owens River
on the Longears ranch and used as a line shack.
Eventually it was abandoned and fell into a bit of disrepair...
Then in 1979,
a Mammoth Elementary School, 3rd grade class, discovered it.
And, to make a long story short...
...it was disassembled and then reassembled on federal land at the
Mammoth Lakes Visitor Center!!!
