This is the day...

...that Spring finally showed up!!!

Yesterday was the perfect example of the common refrain from locals of how they came to Mammoth...

"I came for the winters, but stayed for the summers..."

  3. thank you 'Tsuki and Lachezar!!!

Francisca...It was a gorgeous, clear, and warm day..in the 60's...shirtsleeve, shorts and flip flop weather up here!!! The snow is beginning to melt which is the first sign of spring up here!!! Our Spring flowers come much later than in the lowlands!!! We'll still have snow flurries occasionally...but the big winter storms seem to have abated!

  5. Such a beautiful and subtle reflection... one can imagine this land the way it was before the white man came...

  6. Actually Owen... even before homo sapiens developed!!! Mono Lake is the oldest lake in North America and is thought to be at least 760,000 years old and more likely between 1-3 million years old...homo sapiens are only about 50,000 years old...so this goes waaaaaay back!!! Perhaps dinosaurs???

  7. Very serene. I was expecting to still see snow on the ground, given how far north you are. Love those snow-capped mountains!

  11. Kaori...it's always fun to see people in shorts when there's 15 feet of snow piled on the side of the road!!! It was a gorgeous day on Friday...today...not so much!!!

Thank you Forgetmenot!!! Glad you stopped by to visit and comment!!! It's a very unusual lake...saltier than the ocean...tufa formations that make it look like another planet...definitely a destination point if you're visiting the Eastern Sierras in California!!!

  12. Hi Kathryn... came by for another look after your responses to me and others. What a fascinating lake! Hope to view it with my own eyes one day. Even spring is relative... having blood thinned by living in the tropics, when I travel, I tend to wear sweaters long after others have discarded their winter wear. Yet I am enjoying the fresh spring cool air here in Bucharest too.

  13. Thank you Francisca!!! It IS a fascinating lake!!! And I totally relate to your having lived in the tropics and feeling the chill....I've lived my entire life in Southern California so this is all a very new experience for me. Never thought about the fact that here in snow country Spring is about snow melt, not spring flowers! I asked a new friend of mine the other day about the timing of spring flowers up here and when she responded sometime in June, it really startled me!!! I love it up here....but it certainly is an adjustment!!!
